Bethesda Offers Free Elder Scrolls Titles on Steam

Bethesda is also abandoning its own game launcher
by Joe Wilcock on May 01, 2022

It's been known for some time that Bethesda is abandoning their own PC game launcher in favor of Steam's, with plans to shut their launcher down on May 11th. The company best known for the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series issued an update on the pending migration via a blog update on their website. As well as an extensive QA section, which is worth reading if you're concerned about previous purchases, they had this to say about the transition.

"Starting on May 11, you will no longer be able to play your games on the Bethesda.net Launcher, but you will still be able to access the Launcher and your Library. So you don’t have to worry about missing the window to transfer. Even if you can’t play your games on the Bethesda.net Launcher, you can still transfer them to your Steam account.

We’re saying goodbye to the Bethesda.net Launcher this year. We would like to thank you for your support and assure you that all of your games are safe. If you’re not playing PC games through the Bethesda.net launcher then your work is done here. Thanks for reading! If you do have games through the Bethesda.net launcher, don’t worry. Starting on April 27 you’ll be able to migrate your games and Wallet to your Steam account. For more details on what this process will look like, read on.

You have plenty of time to plan and begin migrating your Bethesda.net library to your Steam account. The migration to Steam will include your game library and Wallet – meaning you will not lose anything from your Bethesda.net account. Many games will also have their saves migrated, with a few requiring some manual transfers. For games that require it, you will still use your Bethesda.net login to sign in to play. Your Bethesda.net account will not be lost and will still be accessible on our website and in-game, and we will continue supporting all Bethesda.net accounts with our future titles.

Until May 11, you will still be able to access and play your games on the Bethesda.net Launcher, but we suggest that you start the migration process as soon as it’s available."

- Bethesda

In preparation for the full switch over, Bethesda has launched five games on Steam (available to play as of today), three of which will be available for free. The Elder Scrolls Arena, The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is free of charge whereas The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard and An Elder Scrolls Legend: Battlespire will both set you back $5.99.

Time has not been kind to the aforementioned games, but for preservation purposes and historical significance, these titles are well worth a look.
